Let me teach you one of my most favorite techniques I use to keep myself balanced. I consider it my own personal superpower.
My name is Dr. Summer Sullivan and I want to teach you how tap into emotional freedom. This “superpower” is actually known as the Emotional Freedom Technique, usually referred to as tapping.
Tapping is a stress-reduction technique that blends the cognitive benefits of talk therapy with the physiological benefits of acupuncture to reset your energy and resolve physical and emotional issues. As such it is often referred to as psychological acupressure.
Rather than using needles though, EFT uses the touch of your fingertips to help stimulate certain meridian points. Based on Chinese medicine, meridian points are understood as areas of the body where your energy flows through. These pathways help balance energy flow to maintain your health. According to the developer of EFT, Gary Craig, a disruption in energy is the cause of all negative emotions and pain. Tapping on you these acupressure points sends a calming message to your amygdala (the “fight or flight” part of the brain) allowing you to tap into and release negative emotions and pain.
Think of your emotions as “energy in motion”. With tapping you can support your emotions in doing their job by both acknowledging them and them providing them a pathway to be released. Emotions are meant to be felt, provide us essential information, and then to be released. However so many of us have a hard time knowing how to release our emotions and as a result, they get trapped causing both emotional and physical discomfort.
And the really cool thing about this tool is, once you learn how to do it, you can use it any time and any place to radically shift your emotional state to one of peace and balance.
And its not just for adults, kids can learn it too. In fact, research supports kids use of tapping for reducing test-taking anxiety, helping them process grief and loss, managing difficult emotions such as when having a tantrum, and helping them increase their overall self-confidence.
Is there science behind this?
Yes! There are over 100 published studies supporting the effects of tapping on one’s emotional well-being. The American Psychological Association recognizes EFT as an effective treatment for stress and trauma. Currently, EFT has been researched in more than ten countries, by more than sixty investigators, whose results have been published in more than twenty different peer-reviewed journals (over 100 publications).
Furthermore, EFT has proven effective with a wide range of both physical and emotional issues. As such, EFT can help to:
